Chocolate That Makes an Impression
This assortment benefits cocoa farmers in Ghana.
user ratingChoosing farmer-owned Divine Chocolates this Valentine’s Day can make your sweetheart, as well as many cacao growers, very happy.
Divine Chocolates is co-owned by Kuapa Kokoo, a cooperative of 45,000 small-scale cacao farmers in Ghana, who supply high-quality Fair Trade cocoa beans, own 45 percent of the company, share in the profits and have been able to invest in their communities. By partnering with Divine Chocolates, a U.K.-based company that was awarded best social enterprise in the Enterprising Solutions Awards in 2007, the farmers have invested a portion of the profits toward schools, clean water projects, medical care and small-business training for women to help increase family income.
Plus, they make delicious chocolates. The Divine Chocolate Blissful Gift Set, perfect for Valentine’s Day, ($21; www.buydivine.com) is packaged in a handmade, embroidered paper tote holding three large Divine Chocolate bars (in white, dark and milk varieties), Mexican Morning Roast coffee from Mexico, and three recycled paper bookmarks from Nepal. There’s no harm in treating yourself too. Try Dark or Milk Chocolate Hearts ($4.99); White Chocolate with Strawberries ($3.59); or Dark Chocolate with Raspberries ($3.59). Every bar is adorned with traditional West African Adinkra symbols, which deliver messages of goodwill.
