If your mother’s got a sweet tooth, try your hand at becoming an ice cream maker or chocolatier with these two do-it-yourself websites. eCreamery.com lets you create your own pint of ice cream, gelato or sorbetto, with every detail coming from your creative genius, from ingredients to pint design. They offer all the traditional flavors, plus some exotic ones like black licorice, cheesecake, chipotle, white mint and cotton candy. A massive number of mix-ins includes gummy bears, Nilla wafers, blueberry swirl and walnuts. Pick your packaging design and you’re set to receive either a half gallon (4 pints) for $49.99, or a full gallon (8 pints) for $89.99 of your cool creations.
If chocolate is mom’s muse, go to createmychocolate.com, the U.S. offshoot of the widely popular German site chocri.de, which allows you to design your own chocolate bar made from all organic and Fair Trade chocolate. First you choose your base (dark, milk or white), and then select from more than 100 toppings, which includes all of the standards, as well as more unusual items like wasabi peanuts, candied lilac, cheese-curry cashews and jalapenos. You can choose up to five toppings and create a name for your bar, which will be inscribed on the package design. (Bars can also be gift wrapped.)Your creations are delivered within three weeks, with a Standard shipping cost of $6. The company ships anywhere in the U.S. with a two-bar minimum order.
The starting price for a bar is $7.90 (with toppings ranging from $0.10 for sea salt to $2.10 for real gold flakes), with 1 percent of sales going to DIV Kinder, a Germany-based child welfare organization that cares for the needs of children of the Ivory Coast, where a lot of cacao is produced. If you’d rather let mom play around herself, order a chocri gift certificate. Follow both of these sites on Facebook and Twitter.—Denise Shoukas and Nicole Denis
