While $40 worth of margaritas for $20 and free-side-with-entree deals can be tempting, Groupon and LivingSocial have honed in on subscribers’ true gustatory desires with Groupon Reserve and LivingSocial Gourmet. Both cuisine-specific lists offer deals for higher-end restaurants; both self-described “premium” services are also, to up the exclusivity-desirability levels, invite-only. Gilt City, launched by Gilt Groupe in 2010, is similar in its high-end scope, offering multi-course prix fixe deals on such fare as New Year’s Eve Party tickets to Eataly’s Birreria, but subscriptions are open to all. It’s nice to see Groupon and LivingSocial introducing a system that’s focused more on quality than quantity (for now, anyway). —Eva Meszaros
