Selling cookies and earning badges, the revered rites of passage for the Girl Scout, have gotten a bit more socially and environmentally conscious. In 2011, young troopers built awareness about the rainforest-destroying palm oil used in the beloved sweets, which has led Girl Scouts of the USA to pledge better practices starting with the 2012–13 cookie season. What’s more, in the society’s first badge revision in 25 years, Girl Scouts can now earn such empowering badges as Computer Expert, Money Manager and Locavore.
In the youth-focused politically wrought world of food policy—with cafeterias as the frontline battleground—a focus on healthy lifestyles and the origins of food is a valuable and relevant realm for young girls. The earning guidelines for the Locavore badge include interviewing local-food experts and learning about seasonal produce with the ultimate goal of being able to prepare a seasonal, local meal. And don’t worry, our precious Thin Mints and Samoas aren’t going anywhere—they’re just evolving, like the smart cookies that sell them. —Eva Meszaros
