When the first-ever daytime talk show devoted to all things food was announced back in April, it was already off to a rough start: The big reveal of The Chew coincided with the announcement that it would be replacing the beloved, decades’ old show All My Children. The soap’s followers associated the fall of their favorite daytime drama with the premiere of a show presumably targeting the same demographic, and the backlash was as melodramatic as an episode of AMC. But the harsh words didn’t end there; every celeb chef and food blog gave their two cents about the Mario Batali–hosted program, which would also feature a rotating cast including Top Chef’s Carla Hall, chef Michael Symon, nutrition expert Daphne Oz and entertaining guru Clinton Kelly. While it didn’t get the warmest welcome, ratings have climbed through the fall, and it looks like The Chew will keep the gustatory banter coming in 2012. —Eva Meszaros
