A Toast to Paul
Paul Newman gives us a reason to raise a glass.
user ratingWas there anything that Paul Newman wasn’t good at? We swooned over him on the silver screen, and happily indulged in his line of Newman’s Own food products, not only because each item was delicious, but also because it gave back through the Newman’s Own® Foundation, which donated all profits and royalties after taxes to educational and charitable purposes. His final contribution to the culinary world was to introduce Newman’s Own Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to complete the meal. Twenty-five years ago, he launched his first product—a salad dressing in old wine bottles with parchment labels. Before he passed in October, he commented on the new addition to his philanthropic venture. “Wine was the only thing missing at dinnertime. Now the meal is complete,” said Newman, who worked closely with the Rebel Wine Co., a collaboration of Three Thieves and Trinchero Family Estates, to create these new high-end California wines, which sell for around $16 a bottle. Both wines are made from hand-selected grapes from some of California’s premier coastal vineyards. As with the rest of the line, Newman’s wines also donate their proceeds to charity. For all of his contributions, we’d like to raise a glass of Newman’s Own to a man who made giving back a priority in his life. —Denise Shoukas
