USDA My Plate

The USDA unveiled a complete overhaul of its classic food pyramid, much criticized for its complexity and controversial recommendations. The new format? The dinner plate: stripping down the food groups into their most basic elements, with portions relative to one another and a design that (creators hope) is easier to follow. Reviews were a mixed bag, ranging from complaints that the design was too simple to praise that it simply made sense to the masses. Faculty at the Harvard’s Department of Nutrition went so far as to offer what they deemed a superior version of the new design, reinstating detailed guidelines and tweaking the recommendations just so. At least MyPlate understands we eat on circles, not triangles (except when we eat out of bags, wrappers and containers in copious shapes and sizes). —Eva Meszaros
