West Point Market Cookbook
Recipes from one of the country's best specialty markets.
user ratingRuss Vernon began working at his father's West Point Market at age eight and learned from his mother that the best ingredients make the best food. In the preface to West Point Market Cookbook ($29.95; The University of Akron Press, 2009), he shares, "For 46 years I have carried a recorder in my pocket everywhere I go so that I can bring my culinary findings back to Akron." In doing so he helped turn the market into a local landmark and a nationally renowned specialty food store. When he retired as chairman in 2006 he decided it was time to share the recipes that made the market shine.
West Point Market Cookbook has something for every refined palate, just like the store. Each section is introduced by Russ, who shares stories and tips, like how to make West Point's classic omelet and what was behind the creation of West Point's famous Original Killer Brownie. He also shares tales of trips to New York City and using it as "the greatest retail laboratory in the world."
You'll find simple dishes, like Split Pea Soup, to more elaborate Pecan-Topped Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes, Grilled Wild Salmon with Honey-Wine Sauce and Tiramisu Cheesecake and Aztec Hot Chocolate. He also offers ideas for complete menus such as "Breakfast on the Verandah," "Luncheon with Friends" and "Christmas Dinner," as well as individual dishes, including West Point Market's famous chicken pot pie. Order your copy at The University of Akron Press for a taste of one of the country's best specialty markets.
